In 2004 hundreds of Sikh protestors demonstrated outside Birmingham’s Repertory Theatre against a play depicting murder and rape in a temple. After several police officers were hurt during struggles, the theatre announced it was ending the run of Gurpreet Kaur Bhatti’s controversial play, Behzti. The theatre’s executive director, Stuart Rogers, admitted that the closure amounted to censorship, but said he had a duty of care to staff and audiences.
