In 1882 the actress Dame Sybil Thorndike was born in Gainsborough, Lincolnshire. At the age of 21 she was offered her first professional contract, a tour of the United States with the ‘Elizabethan Stage Society of England’. Thorndike achieved stardom in 1924, when she appeared in the title role of George Bernard Shaw’s ‘Saint Joan’, a play written with Thorndike in mind for the lead part. Despite her left-wing sympathies, in 1931 she was made a Dame Commander of the British Empire, and in 1970 a Companion of Honour.
